St. John’s hosts a variety of special programming including our Music Series with its annual community rendition of Handel’s Messiah, and more. You will find special upcoming events here. For monthly meetings and other day-to-day church programming, consult the church calendar.

Maundy Thursday Worship
MAUNDY THURSDAY is the first of the three days of the Pascal (Easter) Triduum and marks the night of the Last Supper as told in the Bible. Holy Communion will be celebrated at this service in St. John’s sanctuary.

Good Friday Worship
GOOD FRIDAY, the second day of the Triduum, is a Christian holiday commemorating of the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary. Worship on April 18 at 7 p.m. is essentially a continuation of Thursday’s service of worship.

Do you have a basket, bag or drawer filled with unfinished projects? Then Stitch and Chat Tuesday is for you! Bring your project with you to St John’s Lounge on Tuesday, March 18 at 2 pm. We will stitch and chat until 4 pm. Coffee and tea will be provided.

Is your tater tot hotdish is a winner?
Bring your version of tater tot hotdish to Fellowship Hall on Saturday, March 15th by 5 PM.
All versions MUST contain Tater tots, but can be vegetarian, vegan or meat filled.
We will eat our fill, then spend the rest of the time playing games.

Chili & Cornbread Contest
Our Annual Chili and Cornbread Cook-Off is back!
Join us on February 2nd to taste amazing, and spicy, chili and cornbread!
We are selling tickets for $1 each that people will vote with. We PREFER cash or check to purchase tickets.
All proceeds will go to the Youth.
Chili and cornbread is wanted so people can bring their entries to the church kitchen BEFORE worship.

The Evening Prayer service is patterned after the Liturgy of the Hours, an ancient prayer practice that seeks to sanctify time and predates the separation of Christian Churches.
Everyone is welcome to attend. The prayer will take about 30 minutes and will be followed by time for gathering and a chance to get to know members from neighboring faith communities.

Minneapolis Brass in Concert
The Minneapolis Brass Ensemble honors their roots with a variety of music from their past. Featuring trombone soloist Kristen Warfield. Free concert at St. John's Lutheran Church, 4842 Nicollet Ave S, Minneapolis - 4PM, December 15!

Handel’s “Messiah” - an Oratorio
St. John’s Music Series will present St. John’s Oratorio Chorus in Handel’s “Messiah” on Friday, December 6, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 4 p.m. in St. John’s sanctuary. The chorus will perform with orchestra, soloists, and Music Series Artistic Director Brian A. Schmidt conducting.
These concerts are presented free of charge, open to all. Free will monetary donations to help defray cost are also welcome.
A reception and Holiday Bazaar follow each performance.

Blessing of the Animals
In honor of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the environment (including animals), St. John’s will be blessing animals and passing out treats on the sidewalk on Nicollet Ave from 5PM until 7PM on Friday, Oct. 4.

Organ Concert: A Rededication
This free concert, celebrating the rededication of the newly renovated Hendrickson organ at St. John’s, will be presented by Brian De Young, Professor of Music at Augsburg University; organ student Nate Dawe; and Peder Flaten, St. John’s organist and Minister of Music. Please join the celebration!
