Handel’s “Messiah” - an Oratorio

St. John’s Music Series will present St. John’s Oratorio Chorus in Handel’s “Messiah” on Friday, December 6, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 4 p.m. in St. John’s sanctuary. The chorus will perform with orchestra, soloists, and  Music Series Artistic Director Brian A. Schmidt conducting.  

These concerts are presented free of charge, open to all. Free will monetary donations to help defray cost are also welcome.

"The Chosen" is about the story of Jesus Christ from the perspective of the people who meet him, including the disciples. This discussion is open to all people whether you are an active Christian or not religious at all. We want to hear from all perspectives! Reformation Worship & Octoberfest

There will be lots of celebrating on Reformation Sunday, October 27! Join in worship at 10 a.m.; five young people of St. John’s will be affirming their baptism in the Rite of Confirmation during this service.

Then gather in Fellowship Hall for food, games, and fun, including:

Blessing of the Animals

Blessing of the Animals

In honor of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the environment (including animals), St. John’s will be blessing animals and passing out treats on the sidewalk on Nicollet Ave from 5PM until 7PM on Friday, Oct. 4.

This free concert, celebrating the rededication of the newly renovated Hendrickson organ at St. John’s, will be presented by Brian De Young, Professor of Music at Augsburg University; organ student Nate Dawe; and Peder Flaten, St. John’s organist and Minister of Music. Please join the celebration!

Worship at Lake Harriet

St. John’s will be leading worship along with Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Harriet Bandshell Park, 4135 Lake Harriet Parkway at 10 a.m. on June 23. No service will be held in St. John’s sanctuary that morning.

Tangletown Garage Sale at St John’s

Tangletown Garage Sale at St John’s

St. John’s will be participating in this neighborhood event on Saturday, May 4 from 9AM-4PM in the Fellowship Hall. Proceeds from the sale will go to our fellowship and kitchen fund. All unsold items will be donated.

Various sales can be found around the neighborhood during this 2024 Tangletown Garage Sale Weekend of May 3-4.

Minneapolis Area Synod Assembly

MINNEAPOLIS AREA SYNOD’S 2024 ASSEMBLY will convene Thursday evening, May 2 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Ramsey with the theme, “With Glad and Generous Hearts.” Assembly voting members will be selecting a new synodical bishop in a succession of ballots spanning the three days.

The assembly will not be livestreamed, but live results of each ballot will be posted on the synod website at https://mpls-synod.org/2024-bishop-election/bishop-election-results/ 

We pray God’s guidance and wisdom for all involved in this discernment and call process.

MAUNDY THURSDAY is the first of the three days of the Pascal (Easter) Triduum and marks the night of the Last Supper as told in the Bible. Five young people of St. John’s will receive communion for the first time at this service on March 28 at 7 p.m.

 GOOD FRIDAY, the second day of the Triduum, is a Christian holiday  commemorating of the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary. Worship on March 29 at 7 p.m. is essentially a continuation of Thursday’s service of worship.

Chili & Cornbread Contest

Think your chili and/or cornbread has what it takes to win the Golden Ladle and/or Golden Spatula? Bring in your entry for the contest following worship on Sunday, February 4th. All chili entries are welcome from mild to super spicy, meat-filled or meatless, red or white. People will “vote” for their favorite entries with cash. One chili and one cornbread will win. All money goes to charity.

Nursery care will be available by request for children 2 months to 2 years during Sunday’s performance.
